Memories are long and nights are deep in the Heartland. In town a few lights burn late for the sleepless as they recount the wrongs done to them. Former friends, loves and family who let them down, lied and betrayed their way through the wronged ones life all the while sitting in church and keeping up appearances. Apologies are owed yet the debt remains unpaid. Earlier in the evening conversation at the local lodge had turned to politics and the Obama Apology Tour 2009. The wronged one listened but remained silent. Apologies owed were on his mind.He began thinking about his father telling everyone in town that he was no good and how ashamed he was of his son. What had he done so wrong? Well, certainly he had made some mistakes but he had done what he thought was right, what had been asked of him to do. Now he is told he is wrong. Memories are long in the heartland. Public shaming is woven into the tapestry of town history repeated from one to the next from year to year. The wronged one will never be looked at the same by those who believe public shaming must make it so. The wronged one turned out the light and rolled over in bed. His eyes closed. Sleep would not beat the tears. The nights are deep in the Heartland.
